The Mozambique Channel around Tofo is home to a stunning array of large marine life. Our Ocean Safaris take you on a two hour trip to view and snorkel with Whalesharks, Mantas, Devil Rays, Turtles, Dolphins and Humpback Whales in their natural environment. This unforgettable trip requires no special training and is, for many people, the highlight of their stay in Tofo.
Tofo is one of the best places in the world to see the majestic whale shark. Reaching lengths of 12 m, these harmless plankton feeders are the largest fish in the ocean and the prime attraction of our Ocean Safaris. They are present year round but their numbers peak in the summer months (Nov. - Mar.). When one of our experienced skippers spots a Whaleshark basking near the surface, he positions the boat so that the Whaleshark is swimming toward it. Once the motors are off, you quietly slide in the water and swim with the shark. It is an experience you will not soon forget.
Although Whalesharks are the main focus of the trip, they are by no means the only animals we see. Mantas fly gracefully through the water while Devil Rays (their smaller cousins) make acrobatic leaps into the air. Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtles come to the surface to breathe. Pods of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins will sometimes ride the bow wave of our boat and may even allow us to snorkel with them. From July through October, it is also possible to see Humpback Whales as they migrate south toward their Antarctic feeding grounds. Mothers swim slowly with their calves while males sing and breach. We don't always snorkel with the whales but seeing them in their natural habitat is an awesome experience.
Our Ocean safari boats are skipperd by experienced and qualified skippers. These snorkelling trips are led by qualified Divemasters or Rescue divers , all boats are fitted with VHF Radios and full safety gear. Liquid adventures has the highest safety record in the area.
Liquid Adventures is also a member of Sharklife who promote responsible eco tourism and the conservation and preservation of our Sharklife.
